Understanding Your Results
Looking at raw numbers makes it difficult to see patterns. A frequency distribution solves this by grouping your data into consecutive intervals.
- Class Interval: The range of values for that specific bin. A square bracket
[means the number is included in that bin, while a parenthesis)means it is excluded. For example,[10 - 20)includes 10, but not 20. - Frequency (f): The raw count of how many data points fall inside that specific class interval.
- Relative Frequency: The percentage of the total dataset that falls into that interval. This is useful for comparing datasets of different sizes.
- Cumulative Frequency: A running total of the frequencies. It tells you how many data points are less than or equal to the upper limit of that class.
- Histogram: The visual representation of your frequency table. It allows you to instantly see the “shape” of your data — whether it looks like a standard bell curve, is skewed to one side, or has multiple peaks.
